The Listening Walk: A Built-In Outdoor Classroom Learning Activity
Today for their outdoor learning activity the children went on a listening walk. The practice of active listening, especially in a nature setting, can be a powerful teaching tool.
The main focus for today was to get the children to remain silent, actively listen, and focus on every sound that they heard around them.
When the children really listen to the background sounds, they realise how much they can notice when they pay attention. A listening walk is also a great way for children to pay attention to what’s happening right now, within the moment.
We stopped at various places on our walk and listened very carefully for birds singing in the trees. At each stop, we left a little gift for the birds to enjoy.
